The “Karelias” example

TO VIMA (Editorial) Friday, January 03, 2014

The case of the “Karelias” tobacco company is special, perhaps unique in Greece.

It is the only tobacco company in Europe that has not been bought out by a multinational group, it has quality products that are exported to dozens of countries, has about 60 million euros of profit each year while its cash flows exceed 200 million euros. Furthermore “Karelias” is self-funded and has no need for loans, it constantly invests in development and improving productivity, while sales and employees increase each year.

And because the company bosses are not greedy, they recognize the employees’ contribution in the company’s welfare and gave out 2.5 million euros as bonuses.

This is an especially important deed I the current financial conditions and indicative of the owners’ real perception of social responsibility.

Their example as a whole – from operating, designing and organizing the business to its redistributive initiatives – must inspire all entrepreneurs in the country.

Greece needs pioneering entrepreneurs who will honor their production and the efforts of the people who contribute towards it.

If these values and principles dominate, then the country will take off!
