As you may know, the Niagara Falls almost froze two weeks ago. I wrote an article with some images shot during the day, and I have more! I decided to stay until the night to watch the light show and it was stunning with the ice!

When night falls, they have those huge projectors that illuminate the falls with changing colors (more information on the official website).

We shot for 1 hour or so before sunset and then we went inside to warm up, waiting for the lights. The show started during blue hour, which was perfect to get balance between the colors and the sky.

When it got darker, we started seeing the light rays in the sky, providing a stunning composition on the American falls (see image below).

When it got really dark, it was hard to get an exposure because the colors were too bright. I had to shot two exposures, one for the color spots and one for the rest of the image. I then blended the two in Photoshop using luminosity masks (see image below).

The photos during the day are stunning, but it’s hard to beat the night shots with these lights. They’ve done a great job lighting up the falls, even though I think the falls should be a more “natural” place.

I certainly hope you enjoy these images!
